Today I decided to go basic with my still life. This meant that I would have to work with fruit and veg, but I thought, ”whatever, this will be a piece of cake”… damn, was I wrong.

This particular piece took me hours to get off the ground, and even when I did, I wasn’t happy with it. This piece, however, did give me a new found respect for the painters of old.

I have always thought that anyone who painted a still life did so because they simply had no imagination to do anything different (In fact I only do it for the practice of the act), but I realized that the old masters who did these kinds of paintings must have done so to show their incredible skill.

If you could make something photo-realistic (and mind you this was before photos) you could cement your place as a true master and a craftsman of the highest degree.

As it is evident form the drawing above, I have some way to go before I get there.
